What Jesus Did For Us
Dr. Henry Schorr

The Christian's belief that our spirit lives on in the afterlife is not based on wishful thinking but on compelling evidence that is centered on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Christian faith is built on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus claimed, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” Jesus essentially said: My resurrection will PROVE I am God the Son. It will prove that what I accomplished on the cross will save people from the consequences of their sin.

  1. We have a sin problem.

Sin is a fatal disease that separates us from God and will ultimately destroy us. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Sin violates the purpose for which we were created—to know God, glorify Him, and reflect HIS character. Sin at its core is putting trust in something or someone other than God. It’s saying, “I don’t trust you, God. I don’t believe You have my best interest at heart, so I’m going to go my way rather than God’s way.”

Sin blinds us to God’s best for us, deadens our soul, and, if not addressed, will result in separating us from God for all eternity. The cost of sin is death (Rom 6:23).

  1. Jesus came because wecan’tfix our sin problem.

Many people believe they can appease God by good behavior or good works. Good works are not a remedy for past sins. Our sin still needs to be paid for. The Ten Commandments won’t cleanse us of sin; like a mirror, they can only reveal our sin. A mirror shows us that our face is dirty, but it is incapable of removing the dirt from our face.

  1. God has made a way thru Christ.

Out of His great love for us, God gave up His precious son Jesus, who willingly came to earth to take our place and to atone for our sin. To ATONE means to satisfy. Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross satisfied God's justice and the wrath that was directed at us and our sin.

“God made Him who had no sin (referring to Jesus) to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor 5:21). Just before Jesus died on the cross, He cried out, "It is finished!" He paid the price for man's sin—once for all.

  1. Christ’s gift of grace must be received.

“God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith” (Romans 3:25). We must exercise faith and ACT on what we believe to be true. God’s safety net will be of no avail unless we take a leap of faith into the arms of Jesus and receive the gift of His grace. To receive it, we must repent. Repentance is humbling ourself, taking ownership for our sin, not downplaying it and not justifying it, but acknowledging it and turning away from it.

When we repent of our sin, God places our sin on Jesus, and when we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Saviour, God places His righteousness on us. We can't earn it and we don't deserve it. It is a gift we can receive only by putting our faith in Jesus Christ.

And when we do, we are JUSTIFIED, which is a legal term that literally means to declare not guilty!!

Jesus rose again to prove He is all-powerful and totally trustworthy. HE’S ALIVE! Because Jesus conquered death, we know His promises in Scripture are true.

IN - PURSUE RELATIONSHIP
  1. Do people believe in miracles today? Why or why not?
  2. Give an example of trying to do something by yourself, then realizing you need someone more skillful to do it for you.

UP - PURSUE GOD

Read Romans 3:20-26; Romans 6:23; Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Colossians 2:13-14; John 3:36; John 11:25-26.

  1. Why do people tend to compare themselves to others?
  2. What truths about Jesus' death and resurrection do we read in these verses? What do they reveal about why He came?
  3. Why do people often use the law as a standard for measuring success or right living? What is the purpose of the law, including the Ten Commandments?
  4. Why is it necessary to place our faith in Jesus?

OUT - PURSUE MISSION
  1. Romans 3:25 says that Christ’s atoning sacrifice is to be received by faith. Why is it hard for people to trust only Jesus rather than their own efforts for their salvation?
  2. Where do you stand in your relationship with Christ? How does knowing that Jesus died for you and rose again, and that death is not the end, impact your day-to-day life now?

Personal Reflection

Pause and reflect: "He is Risen!" Meditate on how Jesus is alive and at work in your life. Praise Jesus!

The Word (NIV)

Romans 3:20-26

20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

21But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

2 Corinthians 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Colossians 2:13-14

13When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

John 3:36

36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.

John 11:25-26

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
