Jeremiah: When God’s Plan’s Aren’t Your Plans
Dr. Henry Schorr

EVERYONE wants to make a difference so our lives count; so we pray for God’s direction and step out in faith. However, we often find life doesn’t turn out the way we hoped, because God’s plans for us could be different.

Jeremiah, born in a small village near Jerusalem, grew up in a religious home; his father, Hilkiah, was a priest. God approached Jeremiah when he was a young man, and told him that he was set apart to be God’s prophet to the nations, giving them a warning to stop their idolatry and return to God, or they would be destroyed by the nations surrounding them. Jeremiah knew his plans for the future would change if he obeyed God in this all-consuming role. Being timid, reserved and disliking crowds, he knew the unpopular message from God would result in him being shunned and ridiculed.

Jeremiah made excuses about being the wrong man. But God saw Jeremiah’s humble heart and reassured him He would be there to instruct, guide, direct and rescue him as needed. Jeremiah just had to save God’s people from certain destruction and turn them back to HIM. Jeremiah, despite the high cost of saying YES to GOD, threw caution to the wind, obeyed God, and boldly declared God’s message. Some family members and friends, convinced he was mentally unstable, drummed up a conspiracy to kill him; he was beaten, put in stocks, thrown into a dungeon; there was an attempt to kill him by putting him into a deep, smelly cistern filled with insects, dead animals, etc., and he was increasingly subjected to abuse, suffering and rejection.

Prophet Jeremiah wrote between 625 and 580 BC. In chapter 1, God calls him to be His prophet. In chapters 2-51, Jeremiah talks about the God-given prophecies and proclamations. In the last Chapter, 52, we learn that the predictions about the fall and destruction of Jerusalem and Judah are fulfilled.

Occasionally, Jeremiah regretted obeying God’s call, but he saw God’s Word materializing. It troubled him that nobody heeded his warnings. (In fact, there is no Scriptural evidence that Jeremiah saw his ministry making a difference. He began to write his lament in what is now the Book of Lamentations.) Although Jeremiah was dismayed, he CONTINUED TO FOLLOW GOD, without wavering; he believed God was good and could be trusted, even though he did not understand. When instructed by God, he wrote to the surviving elders and priests in Babylon, directing them on rules for living while in exile, and promising to make a way for them to return to Jerusalem. Verse 11 of Chapter 29, God says: “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This reveals God’s UNFAILING LOVE FOR US. Jeremiah was COMPLETELY HONEST WITH GOD about everything he experienced and ‘rested in God’s sovereignty’ until his death. Joseph, at a young age, was also called by God to be a leader of a nation. Yet he spent many years as a slave in Egypt, and then was imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit; he also rested in the sovereignty of God.

When we surrender our lives and allow GOD to show us HIS plans for us, HE will use everything that happens to us to draw us closer to Himself, shaping us into the person HE created us to be, in HIS time. Whom will you choose today?

IN - PURSUE RELATIONSHIP

1. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up? What were the outcomes of those hopes?

2. Has there been a time in your life when God changed your plans? What was your response?

UP - PURSUE GOD
  1. Read Jeremiah 1:4-10 and 17-19. What was Jeremiah's response to God? How did God confirm Jeremiah's calling? How was God's sovereignty revealed?
  2. Read Jeremiah 20:7-14; 29:11 and Lamentations 3:22. What were the results of Jeremiah’s faithfulness? How did Jeremiah stay faithful to God?
OUT - PURSUE MISSION

1. What aspect of God's call to Jeremiah resonates with you most? Why?

2. Do you or someone you know need to be reminded that "God has His best interest for you"? Pray together for this person.

Personal Reflection

"God's plan for our life isn't us getting out a canvas and painting a portrait of our plans for God." – Henry Schorr. Is there a specific area in your life that you need to surrender to God? What is the next step God is urging you to take? How will you act on it?

The Word (NIV)

Jeremiah 1:4-10 4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

Jeremiah 1:17-19 17 “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 20:7-14 7 You deceived me, Lord, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long; everyone mocks me. 8 Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. 9 But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,” his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.

10 I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side! Denounce him! Let’s denounce him!” All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him.”

11 But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; their dishonor will never be forgotten.

12 Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous and probe the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause.

13 Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.

14 Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me not be blessed!

Lamentations 3:22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
