Position Summary:

The New Canadian Hub (NCH) ESL Teaching Assistant supports the Lead Teacher in providing quality English language instruction and a safe and welcoming community for new immigrants and refugees of all faiths and cultures to learn about Jesus. They are attentive to student needs beyond language learning, working with the ESL teacher and staff to listen, pray for/with, and encourage students.

For some volunteers, this may lead to learning and growing in capacity to become a Lead Teacher.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist Lead Teacher in class with specific tasks
  • Be faithful in attendance and give notice to Lead Teacher when absence is required
  • Be intentional in developing safe and caring relationships with students
  • Be prepared to share personal faith and enter into missional opportunities, as Spirit leads
  • Pray regularly for your students
  • Attend morning or evening staff and volunteer prayer time

Time Commitment:

  • 1-2 classes per week (1.5 hours per class); 1-2 hours of prep/week; and occasional special events
  • Classes are Tuesday and/or Thursday, 10-11:30 am or 7:00-8:30 pm
  • Able to commit to one semester at a time (fall, winter, spring)

Qualifications:

  • Understanding of, and agreement with, the CSC Statement of Faith, Mission and Pursuits
  • Christ-like love and respect for new immigrants/people of other faiths and cultures
  • Prior immigrant serving and/or intercultural life experience

Training:

  • Foreign to Familiar: reading and response
  • Familiarization with NCFP Volunteer and ESL Teacher manuals
  • Intercultural Competence Workshop
  • Participation in ongoing NCFP general volunteer and teacher specific trainings
