Position Summary:

The New Canadian Hub (NCH) ESL Teacher provides quality English Language instruction with a focus on developing relationships and creating a safe and welcoming community for new immigrants and refugees of all faiths and cultures to learn about Jesus. They may also lead and mentor a volunteer Teaching Assistant in their class.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan lessons and prepare materials for classes from a Christian worldview, out of a personal relationship with Jesus
  • Develop caring, Christ-like relationships with students and pray for them regularly
  • Follow up with students when classes are missed
  • Be faithful in attendance and give advance notice to ESL Coordinator when absence is required
  • Manage emergencies and report to staff; share “God-Stories” and prayer needs with staff
  • Attend all training sessions if possible

Qualifications:

  • Understanding of, and agreement with, the CSC Statement of Faith, Mission and Pursuits
  • Christ-like love and respect for new immigrants/people of other faiths and cultures
  • TESOL Certification or Education background is an asset
  • Prior immigrant serving and/or intercultural life experience

Training:

  • Foreign to Familiar: reading and response
  • Familiarization with NCH Volunteer and ESL Teacher manuals
  • Intercultural Competence Workshop
  • Participation in ongoing NCH general volunteer and teacher specific trainings

Time Commitment:

  • 1-2 classes per week (1.5 hours per class); 1-2 hours of prep/week; and occasional special events
  • Classes are Tuesday and/or Thursday, 10-11:30 am or 7:00-8:30 pm
  • Able to commit to one semester at a time (fall, winter, spring)
