In October 1981 and after finishing his doctorate, a young long-haired Henry Schorr with his wife Gwen and their baby son Matthew, begun his journey at Centre Street Church (CSC) serving as an Associate Pastor, providing leadership to Youth, Young Adults, (also called “College and Career” or “C&C”), Discipleship, and Worship/Choir.
At the time, the number of youth could all fit in Pastor Henry’s van. By 1985 the Youth and Young Adults ministries were flourishing, and about 275 people were attending CSC. Then, in 1986 The Pastor/Parish Relations Committee appointed Pastor Henry as Senior Pastor to lead CSC. “I felt totally inadequate for the role,” said Pastor Henry, thinking back. But he also felt supported by the prayers and encouragement of the church lay leaders.
Prior to Pastor Henry coming on as Senior Pastor, the lay elders had covenanted to pray regularly for the church and its leaders. To this day, Pastor Henry believes that commitment to prayer was a turning point in CSC’s history. And so for the next 40 years, Pastor Henry – led by God’s hand—has faithfully dedicated his pastoral role to introduce people to Jesus and help them become His fully devoted followers.
Thousands of individuals and families have been deeply impacted by the work God has faithfully carried out in and through the life and ministry of Pastor Henry. Through his leadership and unwavering commitment to God’s calling, countless lives have been transformed and encouraged in their faith journey.
In March of 2026, Pastor Henry transitioned from his role as Senior Pastor to Pastor Emeritus and Lead Teaching Pastor at CSC, where he will continue preaching during weekend services. In light of this transition, we want to take intentional time to celebrate and express our heartfelt appreciation for his many years of faithful service and devoted obedience to God’s calling. His legacy of leadership and spiritual influence continues to leave a lasting impact on our church and community, and we are deeply grateful for all that God has accomplished through him.
Over the next few months, Pastor Henry and Gwen will be visiting each of CSC’s five campuses during weekend services, spending time and connecting with each congregation. Here is the schedule for these visits:
