Build Debt Free Celebration
Dr. Henry Schorr
May 3 / 4, 2025

Even though God is sovereign and in control, He has chosen to accomplish His redemptive purposes through His church. Because Centre Street Church stepped out in faith over the years to BUILD MORE ROOM FOR GOD, thousands of people have been introduced to Jesus, and we’ve been able to provide millions of dollars to support churches, missionaries, and mission agencies who share our vision and mission in our city, nation and around the world.

Why do we invest in buildings? Why don’t we just meet in homes?

  1. Buildings matter because they mattered in Scripture. All through the Bible God regularly called his people to come together to worship. In the OT era God called His people to celebrate various festivals and feasts, to gather regularly at the temple or tabernacle to give thanks for His faithfulness and goodness. In the NT the early church met in homes AND in larger numbers in the temple courts, to worship, to hear the teaching of the apostles, and to invite people to know Jesus.

Why does God want His people to gather together? Because when we are by ourselves, we are prone to forget God and all He has done for us, to go our own way, and even be seduced by counterfeit gods. God never intended us to live the Christian life alone.

We place high value on gathering together in small community groups, in homes and other spaces, to care for and pray for one another and to be on mission together. We also follow the example of the early church by coming together WEEKLY in larger spaces to worship and praise our Lord for all He is doing, to fellowship together, to hear the gospel, and to have our faith strengthened. By testimonies and the consistent preaching of God’s Word the essentials of the faith are taught; and children, youth and adults of all ages are equipped and discipled.

  1. Buildings matter because people matter. Our mission as a church is not to construct buildings. It is to introduce people to Jesus and help them become His fully devoted followers. Buildings don’t make disciples, but God uses what takes place in buildings to make disciples.
  2. Permanent buildings matter because they are a visible sign of the church’s presence, where people can find help, hope, meaning and community. Church buildings can serve as a lighthouse--a visible reminder to lost and hurting people that there is hope to be found in Jesus.

OUR VISION is for all of our campuses to eventually have a permanent home.

OUR MISSION will not be complete until Jesus comes again. Our God-given mission is not complete as long as there is even one person in this city, nation or world who hasn’t been introduced to Christ.

Please do for the next generation and future generations what the past generations have done for you. Will you pray for, teach and/or serve children, youth or adults the way others prayed for, taught and served you? Will you pray for and invite someone in your sphere of influence the way someone prayed for and invited you?

And will you give over and above your regular giving to provide more room for God to reach and impact the next generation the way past generations made more room for you to be part of our church family?

A living church is a light to our world. Please join together with other like-minded Christians, invest your life in that which will glorify God, and leave to those who come behind you a legacy of living, serving and giving.

Study Questions
IN - PURSUE RELATIONSHIP
  1. What is your favorite kind of celebration? Why?
  2. What motivates you to give your resources to God? What do you hope they accomplish?
UP - PURSUE GOD
  1. Read Heb 10:24-25 and Acts 2:46 in 2-3 different translations. How and why do we spur each other on? Discuss the sharp nature of the word ‘spur’. How does that change your understanding of what we are to do? How did the early church live this out?
  2. Read Matt 28:18-20, John 20:21 and 2 Peter 3:9. What is God's mission for the church? Why is the church, both the people and the building, important in pursuing God's mission?
OUT - PURSUE MISSION
  1. When have you felt that you have given enough (time, talents, treasure) to the church? What brought you to that decision? How may your community group “spur you on”?
  2. As long as our church is alive and growing, it will cost. As long as our church brings hope to the hopeless, help to the helpless, love to the unloved, and brings CHRIST to those seeking God and spiritual answers it will cost money, and it will need US to serve and to give.” In light of this, what are you led to do as a church, as a group, and as an individual?
Personal Reflection

CS Lewis said, “If Christianity is true, then it is of infinite importance. If it is false, then it is of no importance. One thing it cannot be is moderately important.” If you agree with this statement, does your lifestyle support it? Where does your lifestyle need to change?

The Word (NIV)

Hebrews 10:24-25

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Acts 2:46

Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,

Matthew 28:18-20

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

John 20:21

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
