Café Host

Position Description:

Centre for the City (CFTC) Café Host ensures that our newcomer friends have a positive experience in our café / welcome area. They prepare and serve coffee and snacks, and provide information on programs. Most importantly, they enjoy life-giving, learning conversations with people of all faiths, ages and cultures, and are open to spiritual conversations with them.

Participation Level:

OWN – At this level the Team member demonstrates an ongoing engagement in the ministry. The person has a deeper understanding of the ministry and will have a high level of commitment to it and the team. They will often be involved in recruiting others.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete tasks such as making coffee, keeping the café tidy, serving pastries, etc.
  • Welcome new visitors and engage them in conversation; assist in determining needs they might have
  • Be knowledgeable about and help newcomers access CFTC programs and events
  • Greet regular visitors and intentionally develop relationships with them
  • Be proactive in ensuring an environment of safety, trust, and respect in the café area

Time Commitment:

  • Weekly (9:20am-12:00pm), Monday, Tuesday or Thursday; occasional special events
  • Weekly (6:30-9:00 pm, Tuesday or Thursday)

Qualifications:

  • Understanding of, and agreement with, the CSC Statement of Faith, Mission and Pursuits (cf https://www.cschurch.ca/central/about/who-we-are/)
  • Christ-like love and respect for new immigrants/people of other faiths and cultures
  • Prior immigrant serving and/or intercultural life experience is an asset
  • Attitude of curiosity, openness, and flexibility.

Training:

  • Introduction to Centre for the City
  • Familiarization with CFTC Volunteer manual
  • Foreign to Familiar: reading and response
  • Intercultural Competence Workshop
  • Participation in ongoing CFTC volunteer trainings
  • Plan to Protect
